Title: Academic IT Auxiliary

Address:

Description:

My duties included software development work, PC support, software installation, fault finding, network administration and project research.

One of the projects that I was asked to research  was a method of restoring an image of a PC if required from a network server.  I successfully managed to build a system that worked well, but had  a few problems.  With this system all the technician had to do was to put a single floppy in the drive of the machine, type in a unique identifier for the network connection and sit back and wait. The problems were the restoring of the system registry so as to finalise the rebuild.  I eventually came up with the solution of saving the system.day file from windows 95 to a share on the network for every machine, and after stage one of the restoration copy this file to the PC being rebuilt.

Other tasks include Writing software for usage by the IT Helpdesk, basically a timer to activate an application upon a given time.

Duties included research and development work with Java.  Incorporating Java technology with technology already in place.  The basic research undertaken was to incorporate native code (from the operating system) into a Java Applet.  This code would make a Java Applet access the file system of the local operating system, and in a specific environment, access specific hardware.  I am not able to divulge what hardware due to non disclosure agreements with NCR.  This was called Native Methods, and was in the development stage as I was taking on this contract.  I had to make use of all methods of research and communication including books, Usenet, Email, The World Wide Web, and any other ways that arose.  I am happy to say that I managed to complete the contract to the satisfaction of NCR, and in doing so received a cash reward for my work.
